Osteopathy

What’s your goal?

I wasn't sure if I wanted a physio or an osteopath but Emma's whole body approach was just what I needed.”

What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a hands-on treatment that addresses dysfunction by reducing pain, restoring musculoskeletal mobility and significantly improving quality of life. It can also improve training outcomes.

Osteopaths don’t just address current symptoms but look at all the parts of the body to see how it functions as a whole. Osteopathy is rooted in the idea that, for your body to work in perfect equilibrium, all elements must be working equally well. So you won’t just receive isolated spinal work, let’s say, if you come in with a lower back issue. Our expert, Emma, will work to improve joint mobility, decrease muscle tension and positively improve the body’s nervous, circulatory and lymphatic system - all with the aim of facilitating the body’s natural healing mechanism.

Osteopaths traditionally treat a variety of conditions, ranging from minor injuries and postural strains, through to arthritis and back pain. At the studio, Emma treats people of all ages, from athletes to desk workers to mums.

Osteopaths vs physiotherapists

Osteopaths are generally known for being spinal specialists but in reality they’re trained to treat most conditions just as a physio would. Typically, the treatment you receive from an osteopath will be more hands-on and ‘wholistic’ in its approach, taking into account how other joints in the body will affect the symptomatic area.

Osteopathy and fitness

Most people seek out an osteopath when they’re injured but it makes just as much sense to enlist one beforehand to prevent future conditions arising. If you train regularly, osteopathy sessions can work wonders in preventing injury and helping to recover fully. While training, your body is put under various stresses and starts to accumulate fatigue which can lead to ‘over compensation’ patterns. Long term this can lead to additional stresses, on top of the original symptom. Osteopaths are able to identify these compensation patterns when carrying out biomechanical assessments, together with any asymmetry and joint issues. This information is then used to create a bespoke treatment plan, combining manual therapy and rehabilitation, all with the aim of improving the body’s biomechanics, increasing tolerance and helping with recovery between sessions.

What to expect during your visit

During the initial appointment, you’ll be asked about your medical history, lifestyle and any symptoms. Our expert osteopath will use their hands to identify restrictions, tenderness and pain. Treatment ranges from soft tissue manipulation to massage. Advice will be also be provided on posture and exercise to aid the recovery process and prevent symptoms recurring.
